Oak Bark Tanned Leather

J & F J Baker is the UK's last remaining Oak-Bark Tannery. They have been Oak Bark tanning since 1862 at a tannery in Devon that dates back to Roman times. Generations of knowledge have perfected their process to produce beautiful, hardwearing and unique leather with superior tensile strength. Using all natural, locally, and sustainably sourced materials each piece of leather takes over a year to produce and many hours of labour intensive work.

The hides come from Beef cattle raised in Devon.  As a predominantly, free-range farming area, these cattle are a by-product of a sustainable meat industry. The oak bark, taken from sustainably Coppiced UK trees is dried and then crushed. They even have a 400 year old mechanism that is run by a water wheel.

The J & F J Baker leather shoulders I use - are what is known in the industry as 'uncorrected' this means that the grain and natural scars can be present in my work. This adds a character and a uniqueness. Over time, with age and through daily wear each of my pieces will pick up personal wear marks and will darken through the natural patina change becoming unique to you.

Care

J. & F.J Baker leathers are Oak Bark tanned for strength and durability.  When they require cleaning or ‘feeding’ I recommend wiping with a damp cloth, applying saddle soap or a natural leather balm and buffing with a cloth or soft brush, before leaving to dry naturally. Please do not use oil based leather feeds as these displace the greases in the leather and cause the fibres to dry out and degrade. For any further help please get in touch with me.
